#2 Westboro Baptist Church Protesting School For A PLay

Many people know of the Westboro Baptitist Church because of the picketing they held outside a soldiers funeral who was gay. They are mostly know for their anti- gay remarks, signs, and protests.
However, they will be taking this anti-gay hate to Granite Bay High School because of their production of "The Laramie Project". Many people are unaware of what this play is truly about. It is about a boy named Matthew Shepard. He was beaten to death and targeted just for being gay.
This play will also be showing scenes representing the Westboro Baptitist Church during the 1988 hate-crime of Matthew Shepard.
They will be protesting in Northern California this week.

  1. #1- I like this article that you choose. You really choose something that has both views on the situation and what is being done about it. I don't think that the church had any right to protest against the funeral or the play that is being held. It does not involve them and they should not be concerned. Overall good job.

  2. #2--It is unfortunate that such hateful, horrible people can exist. It's the flipside of our American value of freedom that people also have the freedom both legally and to a small extent socially to act contrary to kindness and love. (A few people may defend them no matter how hateful they are because of free speech.) It's interesting from an intellectual perspective that they choose to attack a play. One one hand, luckily, it is probably harder for them to crash private events. On the other hand, it's interesting that they are attacking a symbol of gay people gaining respect and importance from the mainstream. They are trying to directly attack ideas and attitudes which ARE changing and they cannot stop from changing! Ultimately these attacks are an attempt to get at the the source of what they hate, but they are futile, because projects such as this play are but effects of a larger societal shift towards greater acceptance, understanding and respect.
